Downwell is a game we have been playing a lot lately. Released by Moppin in 2015, this relatively small game features some big gameplay for the price point. It is an absolute blast and will keep you coming back for more.
But what makes Downwell so good? Well…glad you asked. We breakdown the three things about this game that stand out the most to us.
Graphics
Right from the jump (no pun intended), the visuals in Downwell catch your attention. Simple, clean, monochrome pixel art with strong red accents. The meticulous use of a single color (or other colors if you choose to change the color palette) with the black and white backdrop really helps elements in the game world to ‘pop’. The intentionality of the visuals keeps the player focused on the action in the game, making the environments feel more alive. A master class in retro graphics execution.
Unique Vertical Gameplay
Most vertical action/shooter games have a tendency to go ‘up’. Not Downwell. As its name suggests, in this game you are falling down. The only way to stop falling is to shoot from your feet (until you run out of ammo) or land on a platform. Carefully placed enemies on small ledges makes slowing down quite treacherous for the player. The urgency to keep moving is the result of effective level and enemy design. In a genre filled with games that go ‘up’…Downwell makes falling an very fun and unique experience.
Fall Speed Control
The way the player can control their fall speed is another aspect of this game the developer got right. Shooting from your feet will slow the player down, suspending them in space for a brief period of time. The integration of the shooting mechanic while falling almost makes the player feel like they are driving a car. Shooting (or hitting the brakes) helps you avoid falling too fast. Which is a good thing…because falling too fast in this game lands you in a world of pain.
Downwell does a lot of things right. Superb retro graphics, unique vertical gameplay and well-designed fall speed control all come together to deliver a truly fun gaming experience. There really isn’t another game out there like it.
In Downwell you fall a lot. You fall fast. You blow stuff up with your feet. And it is glorious.
