Halo multiplayer is an absolute blast. The game modes, maps and weapons work together in perfect harmony to deliver one of the best competitive shooter game experiences around. Much of the longstanding success of Halo’s multiplayer can be attributed to the incredible maps. And there are a lot of them to choose from. Today we are going to focus on the best Slayer map ever made. Lockout from Halo 2.
There are a lot of things that make Lockout the best Slayer map ever. The level design/layout is definitely at the top of that list. Lockout features an open courtyard in the middle of the map which ties together three (3) larger building spaces. Each of these areas feature a series of small rooms located at different elevations. A couple of high ledges can also be accessed. These spaces are perfect for hiding, ambushing and picking off unsuspecting players moving through the map. Lockout’s thoughtful layout design forces the player to keep moving in order to stay alive. It provides an unmatched sense of urgency which pairs nicely with the Slayer game mode.
In addition to stellar level design, Lockout does a nice job with weapon selection and placement. There is a good mix of close and long range weapons for the player to choose from. Weapons are primarily located throughout the building rooms and corridors. Since the map is relatively small, it does not take long to figure out where the best weapons are located. The energy sword is great for crushing opponents throughout Lockout’s narrow and winding corridors, but weapons like the Battle Rifle are also effective if the player can keep the high ground without getting cornered.
Speaking of high ground, verticality is something that Lockout has plenty of. With a couple well-timed jumps the player can easily go from a high ledge to a lower level walkway. The jump mechanic combined with well-placed level geometry allows the player to move across the entire map quickly while avoiding enemy fire. Being able to change elevations and traversing the level quickly is important. Standing idle too long will result in death. Players who learn how to navigate the different heights of the map are often those with the most success. Just make sure you land your jumps. Falling to your death is common in Lockout.
We believe that Lockout is the best Halo Slayer map ever made. Exceptional level design/layout, weapon placement and the verticality of the map really help it stand apart from the rest. Anyone who has played Lockout knows that killing sprees and mayhem are commonplace. Not to mention throwing grenades is ridiculously satisfying in this level. Rarely is Lockout vetoed by players in Slayer matchmaking…just saying…
