Halloween is right around the corner. It is the perfect time of year to play a horror game. Over the last twenty years the horror genre has exploded in popularity. Nowadays there are so many quality titles to choose from. Today we are taking a look at three of our favorites.
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4 is a third-person horror shooter developed by Capcom. The game was initially released for the Nintendo GameCube (and later the PS2) in 2005. Resident Evil 4 is deservingly considered one of the best games in the franchise. The over-the-shoulder camera and precision aiming was groundbreaking, changing third-person shooters forever. The environments in the game were also terrifying. Enemies pop-up in windows and appear out of nowhere. Add in an incredible story and you have a horror game masterpiece.
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead is first-person horror shooter developed by Valve and Turtle Rock Studios. The game was released for Windows and Xbox 360 in 2008. Left 4 Dead is one of the greatest horror survival games ever made. The enemy delivery makes this game really special. Enemies will congregate quickly (and en masse) on the player’s position. Players (and bots) must work together to escape each level or they will quickly be overtaken. The developers managed to create the sense of urgency one might expect from a zombie apocalypse. The amazing audio only adds to the ambiance of this frantic, creepy game experience.
Dead Space
Dead Space is a third-person sci-fi horror shooter developed by EA. The game was released in 2008 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and Windows. Dead Space takes place on an abandoned spaceship overrun with alien Necromorphs. Throughout the game the player will move through a mix of tight corridors and larger rooms, as the story (which is really good) slowly begins to unfold. Navigating through the dark-lit, desolate ship makes the player feel totally alone. But danger lurks around every corner and the intense pockets of combat make this game an instant classic.
There are a lot of horror games to choose from. But you cannot go wrong with Resident Evil 4, Left 4 Dead and Dead Space. Each game has its own unique (and scary) vibe. Not to mention the gameplay is top-notch. If you haven’t played one (or all three) of these games, you need to. And Halloween is the perfect time to do so.
